Final assessment- Steps of completing my final design

Model and designer: Hoi Io Leong (me) and hair stylist: Mihaela Solomei

Equipments:
  • An apron
  • Padding x 2
  • Sectioning clips
  • Hair clips
  • Hair pins
  • U-shape hair pins
  • A hair crimper
  • A hair straightener
  • Hair spray
  • Pearls pins x 8
  • A paddle brush
  • A comb
  • A tail comb
Step 1: Wash the hands before getting started. Ask the model to put on the apron and if she has got any allergies.

2: Section the hair (divide the hair into two parts: the front part is for zic zag curls, while the back is for padding).

3: To create the curls, put the hair out and in and out the hair pins. Continue with the process until u have finished. Use a bobby pin to secure the end part of the hair. After that, use hair straightener to crimp the curls.

4: Divide the hair into two sections. Leave the bottom part more hair as it is used to wrap around the padding. Crimped the hair first and separate the hair into half (Left and right). After that, start with the left session, measure where to place the padding.

5. Separate the hair into two and create a braid in between to hold the padding. After that, use hair clips to secure the braid onto the hair and then secure the padding onto the braid. Graband wrap the bottom part of the hair around the padding and put the top part of the hair over so the padding and no gaps will be seen. Secure the hair with hair pins. Do the same for the right side as well.

6. Put the top part of the hair which is not crimped over the crimped hair and leave two strands of hair from each side for the plaits. Secure the straight hair with hair pins at the bottom. Use hair spray and spray the straight hair, after that comb the hair to make sure the hair are straight and have a smooth texture. For the four strands of hair that I’ve left previously, create plaits and secure them with hair clips at the bottom.

7. Remove the pins from the curls at the front and brush them to create a big, frizzy texture.

8. Attach the pearls onto the plaits.

My final design (Hair chart and doing the design on my practice head), contemporary images inspired and chosen Elizabethan portrait

Final design hair chart

On above, I have drawn my final design out and it is the combination of design 2 and 3 that I've done previously and also the pearls composition is what I've decided to use after I experimented on the previous blog post.

On above, I have tried my final design on the practice head to show what it looks like.

Adding decorations (Pearls) - Composition experiments

For my final design, I have decided to add pearls to decorate it and also because on 'The Phoenix Portrait', Elizabeth wears many pearls to show wealth and purity. I like the idea of pinning the pearls onto the fishtail braids which makes the hairstyle look more unique and not boring.

1
On design 1, I have pined four pearls on the same level in the middle of the four braids.
2
On design 2, I have just pinned two pearls in the middle of the two braids on the middle while the two sides of the braids, I have pined two pearls on each of them and they placed one upper and one lower than the middle ones.
3
For design 3, I have pined two pearls on each braids and they are placed on the same level.
On above, I have experimented with three different compositions and my favourite is design 3 as I like how the pearls are being placed on the same level and how they look neatly on the hairstyle. So I have decided to use design 3 on my final design.

Upside down heart shape with circular shape padding?

Experiment with shapes at the back of the design
On above, I have drawn out two different shapes for the back of my design. On the left (design 1) is just a nice, smooth texture at the back that I've done on the previous blog posts, while on the right (design 2) features an upside down heart shape which is my original idea of my design 2. On below are the photos which my partner has tried for the heart shape hairstyle using circular padding.

Equipments:

  • An apron
  • Sectioning clips
  • Hair pins
  • Hair clips
  • U-shape hair pins
  • A hair crimper
  • A hair straightener
  • Circular Padding x 2

This time, I have made a circular padding to create the heart shape at the back. Because the padding that I've used  before are too big for the hairstyle which makes the heart shape not seen at the back. My assessment partner, Mihaela has tried the upside down heart shape hairstyle with a circular padding on my head, but I think the heart shape was still not appear very clearly and so I prefer the smooth texture one  (Design 1, like what she did in the last practice) more than the heart shape because I think the appearance isn't look as good as design 1.

Thoughts about the appearance of my final design:
I like the final appearance of this hairstyle which was created by my partner in lesson although the back of the design wasn't result a heart shape. I have adjusted the size of the padding this time because my partner said they are too big last time, but she didn't managed to create an upside down heart shape this time. She told me that if I want to create a heart shape, I might need to make a circular padding and I've decided to try it next time. Although this time the upside down heart shape was not successfully created, but I like the way she did and how it looks at the back. In order to improve next time, she should place the pearls on the plaits more evenly and balance as on my final design, the pearls was set on the plaits and on each plait, there are two pearls and they are on the same levels on each plaits. She has hair spray the back of the hair and then comb it after, so the hair lies flat and create a smooth texture. I like the frizzy hair at the front and that is what I want for my final design look.

Equipments:
  • An apron
  • Sectioning clips
  • Hair pins
  • Hair clips
  • U-shape hair pins
  • Padding x2
  • A hair straightener
  • A hair crimper

This is the first practice that Mihaela did for my design and I like the frizzy textures that she has done on my hair at the front. I also like the four fishtail braids that she has done which I think looks very neat. I have told her that my design is meant to be a heart shape, but she said the padding is too big, so I will adjust the size of the paddings next time. In order to improve next time, she could use hair spray to spray on top of the back of the hair and comb it which will give a smoother finish. Also, I think she placed the padding too high, so at the front, you cant see the shape behind the ears. After she has finished the hairstyle, we have a chat and discussed about it. She told me that it will take more time to do the four fishtail braids on my design so I've changed my idea to normal plaits instead which I also like for my design.

Chosen design

Design 2
Design 3
Because I like both design 2 and 3, so I have decided to combine the idea of the two and create my final design. I like the idea at the back of design 2 which has got a smooth, straight texture, an upside down heart shape and four fishtail braids braiding down the top part of the hair. For design 3, I like the big frizzy curls effects at the front part of the hair. For both design, I have created contrast with hair textures because the front is frizzy and curly while the back is straight and smooth.

The photo on above is the picture which inspire me to complete my design 3. The reason I choose it is because I found it very unique as the idea of the hairstyle create contrasts within two different hair texture and after I've looked at this image, it makes me understand the idea of how to create a modern and stylish hairstyle which links to the Elizabethans and also how to make a hairstyle more creative and dramatic. The contemporary image that I've chosen links to 'The Armada Portrait' because the use of frizzy curly hair at the front. The plaits also links to the Elizabethans as plaiting is one of the hairstyles that they used at that time. On my design, I have inspired by the contemporary image that I've chosen on above by using the big frizzy curly hairstyle at the front, while it also inspired me to use two different hair texture, so on my design, I have made the hair at the back all crimped first and it will give patterns in the middle before I use French braid braiding around the head. The use of pearls pinning on the French braid around links to 'The Armada Portrait' as Elizabeth uses a lot of pearls to show purity and wealth.

Equipments:
  • Sectioning clips
  • Hair clips
  • Hair pins
  • U-shape hair pins
  • Pearls pins
  • A hair straightener
  • A hair crimper

On above, I have experimented the hairstyle on my practice head to see the look of my design and I like the frizzy curls effects at the front which was created by using U-shape hair pins while doing a zic zag curls, after that I have secured it with hair pins and use a hair straightener to crimp the hair. By adding the pearls around the French braid, it makes the whole look more elegant and interesting. I also like how the back of the head ( the crimping, the pearls and French braid) looks like a caul that upper class Elizabethan women wore. During the Elizabethan era, the caul was elaborately decorated with expensive jewels, the more the caul was decorated, the more wealthy the person who wore it and on my design I have used pearls to show wealth. I think the frizzy textures at the front looks good and I'm happy about the result that I've done on this design.
